SAMANTHA DIDN’T WANT to talk to the police. She didn’t want to admit that this was happening, that Mason had found her after all the precautions she’d taken. Or that he had damaged Blake’s car.

Charlotte was already talking to a man in uniform when Samantha descended the stairs. “Is the note still on the car?” Samantha asked, interrupting Charlotte’s explanation of what she found.

The officer raised an eyebrow. “Are you Samantha Reynolds?”

Charlotte looped an arm through hers in solidarity as Samantha answered in the affirmative. She was aware of Blake coming to stand behind them, and the officer’s eyes flicked up to look at the new member of their party.

“And this is Blake Fairchild,” Charlotte said. “I’m pretty sure it’s his car that was smashed up.”

“You haven’t seen the damage yet?” the officer asked Blake.

“No. We were inside the whole time.”

“And you didn’t hear anything?”

Blake shook his head. The only thing he’d been able to hear was his blood rushing in his ears and Samantha’s soft moans.

“I’ll need you to come with me to confirm that the vehicle belongs to you.”

Blake placed a kiss on the top of Samantha’s head as he passed, whispering “I’ll be right back” in her ear.

Samantha nodded then addressed the officer before they could walk away. “I want to see the note.”

The officer called a second uniformed man over who supervised their perusal of the note tucked under her windshield. His near-constant scrutiny made Sam a little uncomfortable before she realized he was just making sure they didn’t touch the paper napkin it had been written on. It read: I saw you go inside with him just now. How could you do this to us? The way you look at him makes me want to smash his pretty boy face the way I smashed his car.

Samantha’s hand covered her mouth as the implications of all of this sunk in. She wasn’t the only one at risk anymore. Charlotte had been followed, Blake was being threatened, and his car had been vandalized. Before, she’d been afraid that Mason might hurt her, but after this? He had implied that he would kill her for being with another man.

That wasn’t what she wanted. Not for herself or for Blake.

Fifteen minutes ago, she was enjoying one of the most pleasurable sexual encounters of her life, and now she was paying the price. She heard the voice of Tim in her head, reminding her that evildoers who stray from the cradle of the Lord pay the price, both in this life and the next. Samantha loathed him and didn’t believe the words, but she couldn’t shake the superstition she’d been raised with. She knew all of that had only been said to manipulate her into complicity, but when she felt like she was being caged in by circumstance, she couldn’t help but entertain the idea that she was being punished for straying from the fold.

A sob hiccuped through her chest and lodged in her throat. For a few seconds that felt like an eternity, she thought she wasn’t going to be able to take a breath.
